92,000 DSi Consoles Sell in 2 Days

April 7, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

The recently launched Nintendo DSi console sold an impressive 92,000 units in only two days.

The new, portable device – the latest version of the popular Nintendo DS series, was released in the UK and US last week and has been flying off the shelves, largely thanks to pre-orders.

Pre-order sales on the portable systems were very strong according to retailers, which makes sense considering it was the first new portable console in a long time.

Priced at £149.99, the DSi has outsold all other console hardware combined in the UK. Retailers have been predicting stock shortages so even now, it’s not too early to plan ahead for Christmas!

DSi Stock Shortages Expected

Nintendo are warning that customers wanting to purchase the new DSi consoles in time for Christmas should do so NOW – despite it being 9 months early and the console not even released in the United States and Europe until April 3rd.

Nintendo’s General Manager in the UK David Yanton issued the warning earlier this week in an interview with Times Online.

“I always advise people to buy early. One of the things that people don’t seem to understand is that factories are producing constantly; they don’t peak and trough. So we’re producing product all the time, but then everyone wants it all at the one end of the year. It’s just so hard to try and keep up.”

While the claim could be viewed as a sales tactic from Nintendo, it is a claim not made without supporting evidence as in recent years, newly released consoles such as Microsoft’s XBOX 360 and the Nintendo Wii have seen such a rush on their products that they have been sold out and consumers have been forced either to pay inflated eBay prices for consoles or to go without.
